Varshney Community is primarily based in western UP (mainly Aligarh, Chandausi, Hathras, Mathura, Bahjoi, Moradabad etc.). The first known reference of the term “Varshney” has been in Mahabharat / Bhagvat Geeta wherein Arjuna had addressed Shri Krishna by this name. Varshney, Varshnei, Varshnai, Varshnaya, Varshni, Vrishni or Vrushni are family names from India. They are variant spellings of the name Varshneya, first recorded in the Mahābhārata[1] as used by Arjuna to address Vasudeva Krishna. This group is collectively known as Barahseni, which also includes some other family names such as Dwadashreni. The Barahseni are a sub-caste found in Uttar Pradesh. Their name is a combination of the words barah meaning twelve and sena meaning army. The Barahseni are found mainly in western Uttar Pradesh, and in particular in the districts of Aligarh, Bulandshahr, Mathura District, Agra and Badaun. They speak both Hindi and Khariboli, and have customs somewhat similar to other Bania castes. The Barahseni were the traditional bankers of North India, while many, especially in Aligarh District, were substantial landowners.[2] In religious terms, Varshney consider themselves to be progenies of Sri Akrurji Maharaj. There is some debate over whether Varshneys belong to the Vaishya (merchants) or Kshatriya (warriors and rulers) caste. Although the Varshney community remains centred in western Uttar Pradesh, many have migrated around the world. The name traditionally represents the business community and also some landowners and former zamindars. A large number have also entered other walks of life including the professions and Civil Services. Not all members of the Varshney community use the word Varshney as their surname; many, perhaps half of them, use Gupta. The cultural anthropology of Varshneys is closely connected to the city of Mathura. The commercial relations of Shwafalk, the father of Akroorji were spread far and wide. He was skilled in the management of finance. He was not much interested in the ruling work (The work of Kshatriyn) on account of his work in strengthening the economic condition of Varanasi the King of that place married his daughter off with him. On account of his maternal place being a centre of learning studies and teachings, Akroorji was by temperament a learned man with saintly tendencies. Alongwith that he inherited the skill of commercial Aealings from his father shwafalk. He was born in the Kshatriya family with the respective tendencies. Even a cruel king like kans recognized the merit and influence of Akroorji, When Kans failed in calling Krishna to Mathura by all other means, |
